Several years ago, I worked in an office where the staff had banded together to rid themselves of what they thought was a toxic manager. They were clearly frustrated by his poor management style, to put things kindly. They were ready to take any action they could to get rid of him – legal action that is. HR responded by contracting a motivational company to see if they could get the manager and staff working together with more harmony and productivity. That company was Brian Tracy International.

When the consultant arrived to present the seminar, the manager was “conveniently” away on a business trip and would not be attending. The staff became even more incensed since they thought he needed the seminar more than they did. I felt sorry for the consultant when she was confronted by 25 angry participants. Was I in for a surprise! She calmly took us on and over a two-day period, ah-ha's and hmmm's began to take the place of angry outbursts and finger-pointing.

Everyone Agreed They Felt More Empowered!

By the end of the seminar everyone agreed that they felt more empowered about their workplace and a positive attitude began to prevail. The office soon became recognized for its great attitude, team spirit and increased productivity, one of the best in the region, and which continued for several years. And the manager? His management style remained relatively unchanged and he transferred out a few years later. What inspired this change? Many topics were discussed over the two days as you can imagine. The three that stand out in my mind were:

1) Unlocking Your Potential
2) Your Subconscious Powerhouse
3) Taking Charge of Your Life

Did you notice anything in common in these topics? Was there anything about “him”, “her”, “they” or “them”? No! In fact, the common element is YOU. You see, it is always about YOU and never about THEM. While this may seem difficult to grasp, from my experience in that toxic office years ago, to witnessing these principles in action today, and “owning” up to my own stuff, has completely transformed my life as it did the lives of the 24 others years ago.

Why not see for yourself? As Dolly Parton said: “Figure who you are; then do it on purpose.” You are the only one that can create anything you want in your life so why not start today? Who knows what the Universe has in store for you – er, should I say, what you have in store for yourself?
